Pilgrim Furniture Eliminates Driver
Overtime.
The Need
Pilgrim Furniture was using a manual routing, scheduling,
and cubing process that would take several hours a day. The
warehouse manager of the furniture retailer would build routes
based on guesses. Drivers were then on their own to find customer
locations throughout New England. Pilgrim Furniture manually
called customers the night before a delivery to confirm arrival
times.
Our Approach
Visual Control Room was implemented to help Pilgrim
save money and time in its delivery operations, automate customer
communication, and improve customer relations. Orders are
now input from the showroom floor into the Visual Control
Room system and called up by the warehouse staff when needed.
In addition to optimizing routes and schedules, VCR also automatically
determines how much furniture can fit onto each truck. Drivers
call into the Automatic Phone Response module throughout the
day to update their schedules and customers are able to call
the system to automatically confirm delivery times at their
convenience. Plus, directions and maps are automatically printed,
reducing delays due to lost drivers.
The Result
The automated process of routing, scheduling and cubing
was reduced from several hours to ten minutes a day. Driver
overtime has been virtually eliminated. Pilgrim is able to
use the customer notification personnel for other tasks in
the store. And, everything runs much smoother with the warehouse
staff, showroom workers and drivers all sharing the same real-time
information.
